The directional complements 起来, 出来, 下去, 下来 have extended meanings expressing result, continuation, or fixing in place.
Hanyu textbook · Hanyu 4 · Lesson 17
我想起来了,这个地方我们来过。
I remember now; we've been to this place.
Explanation
Most Chinese verb directional complements have extended meanings that express the result of an action.
❶ Verb + 起来: shows an action that begins and continues. “想 + 起来” means to recall, to remember.
❷ Verb + 出来: shows recognizing something, or an action that brings something (a thing) from nonexistence into existence, or from vague to clear. “想出来” means that a new idea comes up in one's mind.
Comparing “想起来” and “想出来”: “想起来” — you had forgotten information that was originally in your mind, and later, through recollection, you recover that memory or information. “想出来” — information that was not originally in your mind comes into being through thinking; the object is usually “办法”, “主意”, “意见”...
❸ Verb + 下去: shows that an action in progress continues.
❹ Verb + 下来: shows an action that makes something fixed in place, or an action (state) that continues from the past to the present.
