Hanyu textbook · Hanyu 4 · Lesson 16
山这么高,你爬得上去吗?
The mountain is this high; can you climb up it?
Explanation
The verb “动” as a potential complement expresses whether an action can make a person or thing change position. The adjective “好” as a potential complement expresses whether an action can reach a satisfactory state that pleases others. The verb “住” as a potential complement expresses whether an action can fix or hold something in a certain position.
Potential complement vs. complement of state: (1) The potential complement expresses whether there is the possibility of achieving a result, while the complement of state expresses a result that has already been achieved (evaluating or praising an existing result). The stress in the former falls on the verb; the stress in the latter falls on the complement of state. (2) The negative forms differ: 演不好 / 演得不好. (3) The yes-no question forms differ: 演得好演不好?/ 演得好不好? (4) A potential complement can take an object, but a complement of state cannot: you cannot say *他演得不好这个节目。
Textbook notes: “没问题” means there is no difficulty and it can be done; it is used to give encouragement, reassurance, or agreement. “加油” means to make more of an effort.
