A 比 B + 形容词

A bǐ B + xíngróngcí

Lesson 1: Comparative sentences: the 比 sentence

Use 比 to compare two things, with the degree of difference (一点儿, 得多…) and the negative form 没有.

Hanyu textbook · Hanyu 3 · Lesson 1

飞机比汽车快。

Fēijī bǐ qìchē kuài.

Planes are faster than cars.

Explanation

To compare two things, use the 比 sentence: A 比 B……

In a 比 sentence, if the predicate is an adjective, adverbs such as 很, 真, 非常… cannot be used before the adjective (don't say *飞机比汽车很快, *西瓜比苹果很大). If the verb has a complement of state (degree), 比 can go either before the verb or before the complement.

To express a non-specific difference between things, 一点儿 and 一些 are usually used for a small difference; 多, 得多 and 多了 for a big difference. 得多 is used in comparisons to indicate a big difference between things.

The negative of 比 is 没有, not 不比. 不比 is used only to negate or to rebut what someone else said.
