Lesson 19: How to read RMB amounts

The units of RMB in writing and in speech, how to read amounts, and when the last unit can be dropped.

46.5 yuan: forty-six and a half kuai

Explanation

The units of account for RMB are "元", "角" and "分"; in speech they are "块", "毛" and "分". The last unit can be left out; but if there is a 0 between two or more units, the last unit must be said (100.50元 is read 一百块○五毛).

If there is only one unit, 块, 毛 or 分, in speech the word "钱" is often added at the end (二十块钱, 五毛钱, 五分钱).
