Lesson 30: Duration complement and separable verbs
How to say how long an action lasts (一个小时, 两年…), and where the duration complement goes with an object and with a separable verb.
Hanyu textbook · Hanyu 2 · Lesson 30
她学汉语学了两个多月了。
She has been studying Chinese for more than two months.
Explanation
To express how long an action or state lasts, Chinese uses a duration complement. In questions, say 多长时间(了); the duration complement is made up of a word for a period of time: 一会儿, 一分钟, 一刻钟, 半个小时, 一个小时, 半天, 一天, 一个星期, 半个月, 一个月, 半年, 一年…
When the verb has no object, the duration complement goes after the verb. When the verb has an object (or the verb is a separable verb), the verb must be repeated, and the duration complement goes after the repeated verb. When the object is a pronoun for a person, the duration complement goes after the object. When the object is not a pronoun for a person, the duration complement can also go between the verb and the object, and 的 can be added between them.
If the verb is followed by 了 and the sentence ends with the modal particle 了, it means the action is still going on.
Separable verbs are two-syllable verbs with a verb-object structure (睡觉, 考试, 唱歌, 跳舞, 毕业, 游泳, 见面…): most of them cannot take an object; a duration complement or a frequency complement can only go between the verb and the object; some have an AAB reduplicated form (游游泳, 见见面, 洗洗澡, 跳跳舞).
The adverb 好 is used before 一, 几, 多, 久… to stress a large quantity or a long time (他学了好几年了).
